Montréal, le 6 avril 2011 – Un contingent de près de 40 coureurs, constitué de vétérans aguerris et de jeunes espoirs, se retrouvera à nouveau sur la grille de départ du circuit Gilles-Villeneuve pour y disputer une épreuve de Formule 1600 lors du week-end du Grand Prix du Canada, les 10, 11 et 12 juin prochain. Groupe de course Octane, promoteur de l’événement annonce aujourd’hui le retour au programme d’une classe de monoplaces toujours appréciée des spectateurs montréalais. Aux noms familiers que sont les Bonnet, père et fils, Schraenen et autres, s’en ajouteront plusieurs, moins souvent entendus autour des tracés québécois puisque des coureurs d’Ontario et des États-Unis et même un de Nouvelle-Zélande, sont attendus dans la métropole.
« Nous sommes heureux d’annoncer aujourd’hui le retour de la Formule 1600 au Grand Prix du Canada. Il est plaisant de constater que les programmes québécois et ontariens sont en bonne santé et nous permettent d’assembler un noyau de concurrents capable de produire un excellent spectacle lors de notre événement, a déclaré aujourd’hui monsieur François Dumontier, président de Groupe de course Octane et président du Grand Prix du Canada. Parlant de santé, nous nous réjouissons aussi du fait qu’un des plus populaires coureurs de la série québécoise de Formule 1600, Didier Schraenen, ait recouvré la sienne et qu’il puisse une fois encore espérer monter sur la plus haute marche de notre podium. Enfin, sachant que de grands coureurs ont fait leurs débuts dans cette catégorie, nous croyons aussi que la présence en piste de brillants jeunes espoirs s’avère une autre source de réjouissance.»
Au nombre de ces jeunes espoirs, mentionnons la présence attendue des Québécois Charles Leclerc et Xavier Coupal, des Ontariens Nathan Block et Aaron McCauley et d’un jeune Néo-Zélandais de 18 ans, Chris Vlok. Bien qu’il ait gradué en série Star Mazda, un autre jeune Québécois, Jeremy Daniel, pourrait possiblement se joindre au contingent de coureurs.
« Nous sommes très heureux d’être de retour pour une 3e année consécutive au circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, une seconde au Grand Prix du Canada. C’est toujours une incroyable opportunité pour nos pilotes d’y démontrer leur talent et leur savoir-faire. Le défi technique du tracé et l’ambiance unique qui règne lors de cet évènement n’ont pas leur pareil. Une fois encore, nous allons offrir un grand spectacle, j’en suis convaincu, a déclaré quant à lui, Marcel Lafontaine, président du Formula Tour 1600 qui a abandonné son volant pour se consacrer à l’administration de la série.
Marcel Lafontaine ne se mesurera donc pas cette fois aux Michel et Olivier Bonnet, respectivement champion et vice-champion du Formula Tour 1600 et à leur vieil ami Didier Schraenen qui retrouveront vraisemblablement de grands rivaux ontariens, les Steve Pickering, Matt White ou Dean Baker. L’an dernier, 42 coureurs se sont présentés aux essais du Grand Prix du Canada, 40 ont pris le départ de chacune des deux épreuves.
La monoplace de Formule 1600 a une histoire vieille de plus de 40 ans. Mika Hakkinen, Damon Hill, James Hunt, Nigel Mansell, Jody Scheckter et Ayrton Senna y ont connu leurs premiers succès, tout comme les Michael Schumacher, Jenson Button, Mark Webber et Adrian Sutil, attendus à Montréal pour la manche canadienne du championnat du monde. Dans sa version actuelle, telle que pratiquée au Canada, la Formule 1600 est une série monotype au plan moteur et pneumatiques. On y retrouve des châssis CMV, Crossle, Magnum, Mygale, Reynard, Swift, Vector et Van Diemen.

Another Race Event added to the Grand Prix Schedule
Montréal, April 6, 2011 – A gathering of nearly 40 drivers, that will include a mix of seasoned veterans and young hopefuls, will once again line up on the starting grid of Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, next June 10, 11 & 12, for a round of the 2011 Formula 1600 Series schedule. Octane Racing Group, promoter of the event has announced today the return of one of the Montréal crowd favourite open-wheel series at the Grand Prix du Canada. Besides the familiar names of the Bonnet family father and son team, Didier Schraenen, and other stars of the Québec-based series, several top drivers from Ontario, the United States and even a young hot shoe from New Zealand are expected in Montréal that weekend.

Among the up-and-coming drivers expected in Montréal, Quebec drivers Charles Leclerc and Xavier Coupal, Nathan Block and Aaron McCauley from Ontario and Chris Vlok, an 18-year old from New Zealand, are among these worth mentioning. Even though he has graduated to the American Star Mazda Series, Jeremy Daniel, another fine young Quebec driver, could join the fray during the weekend of June 10, 11 & 12.

With Lafontaine no longer competing against his old pal Didier Schraenen, Formula Tour 1600 Series champion Michel Bonnet and runner-up Olivier Bonnet, will be facing their Ontario counterparts Steve Pickering, Matt White and Dean Baker for top honours in Montréal. Last year, 42 drivers showed up for qualifying and 40 of them made it to the starting grid.
The open-wheel Formula 1600 goes back 40 years in the motor racing history book. Mika Hakkinen, Damon Hill, James Hunt, Nigel Mansell, Jody Scheckter, and Ayrton Senna have all made their marks in this series, as did current Formula 1 drivers Michael Schumacher, Jenson Button, Mark Webber, and Adrian Sutil who will be competing at the Canadian stop of the World Championship. The current Canadian version of the F1600 championship uses spec engines and tires. The wingless open wheel car chassis of the series are manufactured by CMV, Crossle, Magnum, Mygale, Reynard, Swift, Vector, and Van Diemen.
