Well the Festival is over! What an incredible experience!
Racing in Europe was indeed what people have made it out to be. The racing is tight, aggressive and yet fair. I learned this quite quickly once the heat races started and even more so in the final! I started the final in 8th, and after a good start and a few overtaking moves in the first lap, I found myself up to 5th. At one point I tapped the car in front of me under the brakes and as a result my « bonnet, » as the English would say, flew off at over 160kph. It flew no less then 10 meters in the air and was promptly returned to me after the race, used again this weekend at the Walter Hayes Trophy. From there it was anyones guess who would win, however with Brands Hatch being a relatively tight circuit the passing opportunities were few and far in between. None the less I battled among the top 5 for the entire race, ultimately finishing in 4th position.
I’m honoured to have been given this opportunity to represent Canada along side Zach. It would not have been possible without all the support and I am truly thankful for that.

Back in Canada now after a great week at Brands Hatch. I got back last Monday
and have been working non stop trying to catch back up on my University work!
Just wanted to give everybody a final update on how the race weekend went by.
Saturday was qualifying as well as the heat race, Scott and I were both put
into the same heat. I qualified 3rd with Scott just behind me in 4th. A little
odd to say but I was actually disappointed and thrilled all at the same time
with my effort because the track was a little wet during qualifying and with
the changing conditions we really only had 2 laps to get a lap in before the
rain started falling for real. In my first flying lap is when I put in p3 and
on my second lap I was headed for a lap 4 tenths faster then my previous lap
which would have put me pole position! Unfortunately with the half wet
conditions I carried a little bit too much speed into the last set of corners
and lost the 4 tenths that I had found.
Starting p3 in the heat I got wheel spin on the wet track in my very first
standing start. Basically I did exactly what everyone told me not too! This
pushed me back to 6th and after a very conservative drive I brought it home in
4th in my very first rain race!
Unfortunately that was the last of the highlights for my weekend. At the start
of the Semi final I held my position in 4th through the first set of corners
and going through corner 3 I went over the outside kerb and while bringing the
car back on track I hit a bump awkwardly which sent the car up in the air for a
split second which then caused the pushrod to break. I was very confused as too
what had happened because I had already gone over those kerbs every other lap
the whole week!
Really not the way I wanted to end my weekend but that type of things happens
in racing.
I still learnt a tremendous amount while I was in England and that was all down
to the Team Canada Scholarship and everyone who supported the program. Headed
into next year the experiences I’m bringing home with me will help me moving
forward.

The lifeblood of the Team Canada Scholarship is the supporters and partners who provide the funding for our program and allow us to send two worthy young drivers to the world renowned Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch Circuit in England. 2013 Scholarship winners Scott Hargrove and Zacharie Robichon have now both completed their race seasons at home and are preparing for the trip overseas to represent Canada at the historic event that boasts a history like no other. Both drivers will be sporting the Team Canada racesuits supplied by Paragon Competition as the official partner for driver equipment. TNT Promotions are making sure the Team Canada Scholarship drivers and founders are looking good with the official Team Canada swag.
As the program continues to grow and gain momentum, the objective remains the same. To provide an opportunity for young Canadian racers to showcase their talents on a world stage against some of the futures brightest young stars. âWe are very proud of our two drivers and how they have performed all season on and off the track. Luck, be it good or bad, can always have an effect on results but we are very confident that both Scott and Zacharie will give us their best effort. Â We are very excited to get going!â adds Graham.
The 41st running of the Formula Ford Festival runs over the October 26-27 weekend with pre-event testing starting on the Wednesday the 23rd. The Indy Circuit at Brands Hatch features several classes and the feature event is the Kent powered F1600 race. With previous winners such as Jensen Button, Mark Webber, Johhny Herbert, and Eddie Irvine the event has become a must win for many aspiring young drivers.

Scott Hargrove recently clinched  the 2013 USF2000 Championship and is now poised to make the next step up the racing ladder in Pro Mazda. He also was a race winner in the Toyo Tires F1600 Championship in his one visit where he also had two poles and a second place finish and set a new track record. The Vancouver BC resident is 18 years of age.

Zacharie Robichon finished 2nd in the Toyo Tires F1600 Championship and won Rookie of the Year as well. He had 3 wins, set a lap record and had a further 5 podiums in his first year of openwheel racing. The Ottawa native was a 2012 Team Canada representative in the World Karting Championships held in Portugal. The 21 year old racer is an Instructor at the Jim Russell Karting Academy at Circuit Mont Tremblant and also is attending University of Ottawa.
